At Urban Hearth we believe that good, nutritious food should be accessible to everyone in our community. Chef Erin has been guided by a simple concept; that there is much to be learned and joy to be had when we gather around the table together. She diligently applies this philosophy beyond the dining table to her relationships with local farmers and producers, her team and her neighborhood community alike; bringing responsibility and care towards every step in the food system.
We have compiled this list of food rescues in our area to help inform our community on ways to support the efforts these organizations are taking to fight hunger.
The Greater Boston Food Bank
GBFB is the largest hunger-relief organization in New England and among the largest food banks in the country. Last year, they distributed 117 million pounds of nutritious food to people who struggle to have enough to eat. They are committed to increasing food distribution to provide three meals a day to every person in need in Eastern Massachusetts while supporting healthy lives and healthy communities. This is something that is near and dear to us at Urban Hearth.
Spoonfuls Food Rescue
Spoonfuls is the largest food recovery operation of its kind in New England. Their mission is to facilitate the recovery and distribution of healthy, fresh food that would otherwise be discarded. The Spoonfuls team works to efficiently deliver this food directly to those organizations where it can have the greatest impact and to address the health, environmental, and economic effects of wasted food on our community.
Food for Free
Food Rescue is the heart of Food For Free’s work. Our Logistics Specialists pick up nutritious food that would otherwise be thrown away from establishments like grocery stores and wholesale distributors and redistribute it to partner locations serving food-insecure individuals—homeless shelters, community food pantries, and more. This program prioritizes whole foods, focusing on fresh fruits and vegetables, proteins, and prepared meals. Through this program they provide neighbors with good nutrition and dignity while helping reduce food waste. Many recipient partners transform this food into community meals, directly supporting people experiencing homelessness and food insecurity.
Community Cooks
For more than three decades, Community Cooks has invested in building trusting partnerships that connect caring volunteers, the human services sector, businesses, civic groups, schools, and faith-based institutions to form a dynamic, growing community with a common goal: to feed our neighbors in need and increase their ability to thrive. They identify human service agencies in need of food support for their clients, recruit and connect volunteers to meet those needs, and coordinate 90+ cooking teams, each providing a monthly meal to an assigned local partner agency.
